Israeli Officials Threatens National Film Awards After Arab Film Wins Best Picture
The nation's culture minister has warned to axe funding for the country's cinema honors after A Palestinian Tale, a story about a 12-year-old Arab youth, received its top award.
The film, which follows a boy from the occupied Palestinian territories who dreams to travel to an Israeli city to experience the sea for the very first occasion, was awarded top cinematic prize at the Ophir Awards.
“No deeper slap in the face of Israeli citizens than the shameful and detached yearly Ophir Awards event.”
By taking the prize of the best film category at the national ceremony, The Sea now becomes Israel's submission to the international film competition at the upcoming Oscars.
Questions Over Financial Warning
It is not yet clear whether Zohar is empowered to cut support for the ceremony, according to local media.

Film Synopsis
In the film, Gazawi plays 12-year-old Khaled who is denied entry to the country at an IDF security post during a class trip to the coastal city.

However, in his remarks, Zohar described the national film honors as “embarrassing and disconnected”.
He added: “During my tenure, Israeli citizens won’t contribute from their pockets for a ceremony that spits in the faces of our brave troops.”
Industry Response
Responding to the minister's statements, Assaf Amir said: “As the never-ending conflict in the region exacts a heavy price in death and destruction, the capacity to understand the 'other'... gives a glimmer of optimism.”
He continued: “Despite the Israeli government's criticism on local film, and the demands from parts of the global cinema world to avoid us, the choice of this film is a powerful and clear response.”
Wider Situation
This follows thousands of Hollywood industry professionals signed a pledge vowing not to work with Israeli film institutions that are “implicated in atrocities”.
The nation initiated its war in the territory in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about over a thousand individuals were died and hundreds more were captured.
