Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
