Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
